Thursday 8 April to Thursday 15 April 2027. Two people. No rental car.
Siena and Orvieto
Four nights in Siena for Brunello and Chianti, three nights in Orvieto for Orvieto Classico and a lake-and-cliff-town day across the border in Lazio. Trains between bases, small-group or private drivers for every winery, and every day ends back at the base camp.
Read first
- Weekdays are checked against the 2027 calendar: 8 April 2027 is a Thursday and 15 April is a Thursday. Easter 2027 is 28 March, so the week falls after the Easter rush and before the 25 April holiday.
- Train times come from the 2026 Trenitalia timetable. The timetable that covers April 2027 is normally published in December 2026. Re-check every train on trenitalia.com before buying.
- Restaurant closing days come from 2025 and 2026 listings. Every restaurant here should be booked by phone, WhatsApp or its booking page, and the closing day re-confirmed when you book.
- No one in your party drives at any point. All countryside days use a guide-driver in a minivan or a private car, so every tasting can be a full tasting.
- Pace rule used throughout: at most one guided outing and one booked meal per day, with an open block of two to three hours every afternoon.
Why these two bases
Siena is the required base and sits between the two great Tuscan red zones: Chianti Classico starts at the city’s northern edge and Montalcino is about an hour south. Siena-based companies run small-group winery days that start and end at Piazza San Domenico, a short walk from the recommended neighbourhood.
Orvieto is in Umbria, right on the Lazio border, and it is the easiest car-free second base in the region: it sits on the main Florence to Rome rail line, a funicular runs from the station to the old town, and the train to Roma Termini takes a little over an hour, which suits your afternoon transfer on the 15th. From here a private driver reaches Civita di Bagnoregio, Lake Bolsena and Montefiascone in Lazio in 20 to 40 minutes per leg. Viterbo was the Lazio alternative; its rail link to Rome is slower and it has far less wine on the doorstep.

Base camps (Airbnb)
Siena, 4 nights, Thu 8 to Mon 12 April
Where to look: the streets between Piazza Salimbeni, Via dei Montanini, Via della Sapienza and Piazza San Domenico. Why this pocket: both winery tours meet at the steps of San Domenico at 9:30, so you walk 5 to 10 minutes to the van and back; it is on the flatter northern ridge, a taxi can reach it from the station, and Piazza del Campo is about 10 minutes away on foot.
Second choice: Terzo di Città around Via di Stalloreggi and Pian dei Mantellini, near the Duomo. Quieter at night, but add about 10 minutes each way to San Domenico.
Avoid: anything described as near Fontebranda or Porta Ovile unless the listing says how many steps; both sit at the bottom of very steep lanes.
Airbnb search: Siena, 8 to 12 April 2027, 2 adults
Orvieto, 3 nights, Mon 12 to Thu 15 April
Where to look: along Corso Cavour between Piazza della Repubblica and the Torre del Moro, or the lanes south of Piazza del Duomo. Corso Cavour is nearly flat from the funicular at Piazza Cahen, so rolling luggage works, and La Palomba, Moro Aronne, La Grotta and Cantina Foresi are all within a few minutes.
Avoid: Orvieto Scalo, the modern town at the bottom by the station. It is convenient for trains and nothing else.
Airbnb search: Orvieto, 12 to 15 April 2027, 2 adults
Filters and questions for both hosts
- Floor and stairs: ask the exact number of steps to the door. Medieval buildings rarely have lifts; ground, first or second floor is the practical limit with luggage.
- Self check-in or a confirmed meeting time: you arrive in Siena around 14:00 and in Orvieto around 16:00.
- Heating: April nights in both towns can drop to the single digits Celsius.
- Washer: useful at the midpoint of a 15-day trip.
- Ask Siena hosts for the street-door address that a taxi can reach (the centre is a limited traffic zone, but licensed taxis may enter).
Getting around without a car
Trains: buy on trenitalia.com or the Trenitalia app. Intercity trains need a seat reservation (included in the ticket). Regional tickets bought online carry a date and time; paper regional tickets must be validated before boarding.
Siena station to the centre: the station sits about 2 km below the walls. With luggage, take a taxi from the rank in Piazza Carlo Rosselli, outside the station (Radio Taxi Siena +39 0577 49222). Without luggage, the covered escalators from the shopping centre opposite the station climb to the Antiporto di Camollia; from there it is a flat walk down Via Camollia into town.
Orvieto station to the old town: buy your train ticket to Orvieto Centro rather than Orvieto. Trenitalia’s Orvieto Link adds the funicular to Piazza Cahen for about €1.30; the same Trenitalia page also lists the A shuttle bus from Piazza Cahen to Piazza del Duomo. From Piazza Cahen, Corso Cavour is a flat 10 to 15 minute walk to the centre.
Countryside days: all four winery and Lazio days use a guide-driver who collects you in town and brings you back. Nothing requires a bus with luggage or a rental car.
Day by day
Thursday 8 April: Sanremo to Siena
Sleep: SienaA long but simple rail day with only two changes. Everything after arrival is optional except dinner.
- 06:30Arrive at Sanremo station. It is underground and reached through a long tunnel walkway, so allow 15 minutes inside the station.
- 06:53Intercity 505 Sanremo to Pisa Centrale, arriving 11:11 (4 h 18 min, no change). Reserve seats together; this train runs Monday to Friday.
- 11:15At Pisa Centrale take the next regional train to Empoli (roughly every 30 minutes, about 40 to 50 minutes). Times from here on are approximate.
- 12:15At Empoli change to the regional train for Siena (about 1 hour). Buy Pisa Centrale to Siena as one regional ticket.
- 13:30Arrive Siena (between about 13:30 and 14:15 depending on the connection). Taxi from the station rank to the Airbnb, about 10 minutes.
- 14:30Late bite instead of lunch: a cinta senese or finocchiona panino at Antica Pizzicheria de’ Miccoli on Via di Città. Then rest.
- 18:00Slow first walk down to Piazza del Campo. Aperitivo at Le Tre Rane (small wine bar, Via di Stalloreggi 22) or a Campari at a café on the Campo itself for the view.
- 20:00Dinner at La Taverna di San Giuseppe.
Getting there
- Sanremo station to Siena station, public transport route
- Siena station to Piazza Salimbeni by taxi route
- Fallback if you prefer a later start: a regional train from Sanremo to Genova Piazza Principe, then an Intercity or Frecciabianca to Pisa, then the same Pisa to Empoli to Siena chain. That adds one change and puts you in Siena in the late afternoon.
Eat and drink
- La Taverna di San Giuseppe, Via Giovanni Duprè 132, +39 0577 42286, website. Dining room in a medieval cellar cut into the tufa. Order pici with wild boar ragù or the ricotta gnocchi with Pienza pecorino; ask for a Brunello or Chianti Classico by the glass to calibrate for the tours. Closed Sunday. Book weeks ahead; it is the most requested table in Siena.
Photo opportunities
- Piazza del Campo from the top edge near the Fonte Gaia at about 19:00, when the brick fan turns orange and the Torre del Mangia catches the last light.
Friday 9 April: Siena on foot
Base: SienaNo vehicles today. The Duomo complex in the morning, a long lunch, an empty afternoon, and a hands-on Tuscan cooking class that becomes dinner.
- 09:30Coffee and a pastry at Pasticceria Nannini on Banchi di Sopra, or at Pasticceria Bini on Via Stalloreggi for panforte and ricciarelli to take home.
- 10:15Duomo complex with the OPA SI Pass: cathedral, Piccolomini Library frescoes, Museo dell’Opera and the climb onto the Facciatone. Allow about 2 hours. The pass is valid three days, so anything you skip can wait. The inlaid marble floor is mostly covered in April; it is fully uncovered in summer and autumn.
- 12:45Lunch at Antica Trattoria Papei.
- 14:30Back to the Airbnb. Nothing scheduled until the class.
- 16:30Cooking class at Scuola di Cucina di Lella, Siena’s first cooking school (founded 1996), Via Fontebranda 69. About 4 hours, five recipes including hand-rolled pici, then you eat what you made with wine. Class times vary by season; book the evening session if one is offered on the 9th. If only a morning class runs, swap it with the Duomo block.
- 21:00Nightcap at Charlie Mixology Bar, where Siena’s locals drink cocktails; the owner Riccardo is known for house-made canned cocktails.
Getting around
- Walk: Piazza Salimbeni to Piazza del Duomo, about 12 minutes.
- Walk: Piazza del Duomo to Papei, Piazza del Mercato, about 7 minutes downhill.
- Walk: Piazza Salimbeni to Scuola di Cucina di Lella. Fontebranda is steep; take a taxi back up after dinner if legs are tired (Radio Taxi +39 0577 49222).
Eat and drink
- Antica Trattoria Papei, Piazza del Mercato 6, +39 0577 280894. Family-run since 1936, tables under the Torre del Mangia. Pici al ragù di cinghiale, crostini with chicken liver, ribollita. Closed Monday.

Photo opportunities
- From the top of the Facciatone (the unfinished nave wall, included in the OPA SI Pass): the whole Campo and the Torre del Mangia from above. The stair is narrow and spiral; there is a short timed wait.
- Inside the Piccolomini Library: Pinturicchio’s frescoes are among the brightest in Italy and photography without flash is normally allowed.
Tickets
- OPA SI Pass, Opera della Metropolitana (official). Roughly €15 to €20 depending on season; the roof walk (Porta del Cielo) is a separate timed upgrade.

- Sunday check: Tuscan Escapes describes itself as running departures daily, but confirm this tour runs on Sunday 11 April. On Sundays the Duomo usually opens only in the afternoon, so do the Facciatone and museum in the morning and the cathedral after 13:30.
Eat and drink
- Lunch is included at the estate.
- Osteria Il Carroccio, Via del Casato di Sotto 32, +39 0577 41165. Brick-vaulted osteria two minutes from the Campo that locals still use. Pici al ragù di cinta senese is the dish; finish with cantucci and vin santo. Closed Wednesday, open Sunday evenings on the 2026 listing. Book.

Winery tour providers, compared
Grape Tours’ formula is small groups, family producers, lunch at a winery and a guide who knows the families. The closest Siena equivalent is Tuscan Escapes. Around Orvieto, shared small-group winery tours are thin on the ground; private guide-plus-driver tours that run for just two people are the norm, and they cost more per person.
Tuscan Escapes (Papilio SRL), Siena
Siena-based, minivans of up to 8, departures from Piazza San Domenico at 9:30. Visits small family wineries; lunch is with the producer. Planned here for Saturday and Sunday.
Moro Tuscany Tours, Siena
Semi-private, maximum 6. Combines Chianti Classico and Montalcino in one day, with the option of a boutique Brunello winery. A good backup if Tuscan Escapes is full.
The Wine & Food Experience, Tuscany and Umbria
Private tours with a sommelier and driver, from Siena, Montalcino, Montepulciano and also Orvieto and Montefalco. The upgrade path if you want a fully private day or a Siena to Orvieto transfer with tastings.
Orvietoviva / Teseotur, Orvieto
Orvieto’s local tourism site and its travel agency. Private wine-expert guide and private car for a minimum of two adults, Monday to Saturday. Planned here for Tuesday; also the first call for the Wednesday Lazio driver.
Antica Cantina Leonardi, Montefiascone (Lazio)
A family cellar in caves beneath Montefiascone; private tours with tasting. Planned here for Wednesday afternoon.
